ExpressUpdate is what’s called a data aggregator. Basically, they collect local business information (such as your business name, address, phone number, and website) and send it out to hundreds of different websites on the internet.
While this sounds like a good thing (and potentially is) it’s not so great when they are sending out your information and they have your business name, address, phone number or website (NAPW for our purposes) incorrect. That means incorrect information about your local business is getting blasted across the internet.
Not only can this confuse customers when they call the wrong phone number or show up at the wrong address, but it can mess with your ranking on Google as well.
Google wants to see one business name, one address, one phone number, and one website for your business across the internet. When you have conflicting information out there with multiple names, addresses, phone numbers or websites, it makes Google trust your information less and therefore, they may potentially drop you in their rankings.
And this is why it’s so important to get your information correct on ExpressUpdate. Because it’s not just one website they’re sending your information to. It’s hundreds of websites.
Now that you understand why ExpressUpdate is important, let’s talk about how to fix it.
How To Fix Your Listing on ExpressUpdate
Go to ExpressUpdate and search your phone number.
It should pull up your listing.
Keep that listing up and you need to call (800) 794-1404 (ExpressUpdate’s phone number).
But before you call, take note of the following points. They are extremely important!
- Do not call if you are not the business owner or unless you work directly for the business. ExpressUpdate will ask you and when you tell them you are not, they will refuse to speak with you. They will not work with marketing agencies, consultants, or anyone not directly employed by the business. If you’re not the business owner or a direct employee, call the business, explain the situation to them, and send them this article. It should help the process flow smoothly.
- Do not call from just any phone number. Make sure you call from the phone number on the listing. If they have the wrong phone number for you on the listing, still call from the wrong phone number. If you don’t have access to the phone number to call from, then call from the actual business number you’ll be changing the number to. They will ask you to explain why you’re not calling from the actual number on the listing. Be ready to explain why.
- This may sound strange, but I want to prepare you: expect for them to be rude. It throws a lot of people off when they call. I’m not sure exactly what is going on at their company but that has been my experience almost every time I have called and I’ve heard the same from others. While they may be rude, realize the end goal is worth dealing with them unfortunately. You need to get that information corrected.
When you call in, let them know you need to 1) correct and 2) claim your listing.
They’ll ask if you’re calling from the business phone number.
Then they’ll pull up your listing and you can ask to correct and claim it.
Once they tell you the information will be corrected or you correct it yourself, your job still isn’t done!
You need to check your listing every few days until it gets corrected.
If it’s not corrected, call them back in a week.
Once it is corrected though, that’s it, you’re done!
*On the off chance they don’t answer, they do ask you to leave a message. I would leave a message but don’t expect them to call you back. Call again the next day. And the next day. Until they finally answer.
The End
ExpressUpdate is a massive headache to deal with but they’re even more of a massive headache when they have your information incorrect.
Just deal with them so you can make your incorrect information go away.
P.S. Also, if you don’t want to deal with ExpressUpdate and want to correct the other 3 data aggregators as well, you can check out Moz Local. They will update ExpressUpdate for you as well as Localeze, Factual, and Acxiom, the other 3 major data aggregators all for a pretty nominal fee.
Be aware, Moz Local will say that they distribute listings across the internet to many sites but they have maybe 10 sites they do that with. They oversell themselves there. Moz Local is really just for updating the 4 major data aggregators effortlessly for a relatively low cost.
